Kolkata's dry cleaning landscape
Kolkata has thousands of establishments that describe themselves as dry cleaners. The range of what is actually happening behind those signs is enormous — from professional operations with enclosed automatic machines and regulated solvents to neighbourhood establishments using open petroleum solvents and hand-applied processes that have changed little since the 1960s.
The consumer typically cannot tell the difference from the shop front. Both types of establishment use the same terminology, return garments in similar packaging, and charge broadly similar prices. The difference is in the chemistry and the equipment — and in what remains on the garment after cleaning.
Professional dry cleaners with enclosed automatic machines represent a small fraction of Kolkata's total dry cleaning establishments. The majority of the market — particularly in the neighbourhood and para level — still uses open petroleum solvent processes. Consumer awareness of this distinction is low and growing slowly.
Questions to ask
Before handing over a valuable or delicate garment to any dry cleaner in Kolkata, ask these specific questions.
The visual check
Even before asking questions, a visual assessment of the establishment gives significant information.
Professional signs: an enclosed drum machine visible in the facility. Clean, organised storage for returned garments. A pressing area with equipment that is visibly different from a consumer iron. Staff who handle incoming garments carefully rather than tossing them into a pile.
"The most reliable visual check is simple: can you see a machine? A professional dry cleaner has a significant piece of equipment at the centre of the operation. If you cannot see it, ask about it."
Red flags
The following are specific indicators of a dry cleaning establishment that should be avoided for valuable or delicate garments.
Strong petroleum smell in the establishment — indicates open solvent use with poor ventilation. No visible cleaning machine. Inability to name the solvent used. Price significantly below market rate for professional cleaning. Turnaround time of less than 6 hours for silk or embroidered garments — insufficient time for a proper professional cycle and drying. Garments returned with a petroleum smell — indicates incomplete solvent removal.
