Care that reaches past the garment.

A laundry touches more than clothes. It touches water, energy, the hands that do the work, and the neighbourhood it sits in. We have tried, since 2013, to be mindful of all four — quietly, the way we do everything else.

We do not make grand environmental claims, because most are not true. What we can say honestly is this: we moved away from petroleum and MTO-based cleaning years ago, to enclosed hydrocarbon machines that use far less solvent and release far less into the air. It is gentler on garments, and gentler on the people standing beside the machine all day.

Is The Swiss Laundry environmentally responsible?

We moved away from petroleum and MTO-based cleaning years ago to enclosed hydrocarbon machines, which use far less solvent and release far less into the air than older methods. We also sort carefully and size loads sensibly so nothing is washed that need not be — and the most delicate garments are cleaned without water at all. We avoid grand environmental claims because most are not true; we prefer to state only what we actually do.
