Can dry cleaning damage clothes? What can go wrong — and how to prevent it.

Yes — if done incorrectly. Wrong solvent for the fabric, excessive heat during pressing, aggressive pre-spotting, and overloaded drums can all damage garments. Here is what can go wrong, how a professional dry cleaner prevents it, and what to check before handing over an expensive garment.

Pressing damage — the most common cause

The most frequent source of garment damage in dry cleaning is incorrect pressing temperature. Each fabric has a maximum safe pressing temperature. Exceeding it causes permanent damage — often visible as a shine or glaze on the fabric surface where the fibres have been partially melted or flattened.

Solvent damage — when can solvent affect a garment?

Professional hydrocarbon solvent is safe for almost all natural and synthetic fabrics at the concentrations used in dry cleaning. The exceptions:

Natural rubber components: elastic waistbands and cuffs made from natural rubber (not synthetic elastane) can be degraded by hydrocarbon solvent over multiple cleaning cycles. Modern elastic is almost always synthetic and is unaffected.

Acetate fabrics: acetate is soluble in some organic solvents. Professional hydrocarbon is generally safe for acetate, but some specialist solvents used in stain pre-treatment can dissolve acetate fibres. This is a risk with inexperienced operators using the wrong spotting agent.

Bonded and fused fabrics: garments with heat-bonded interlining (common in fashion jackets and some saree blouses) can de-laminate if the solvent penetrates the bond. Professional dry cleaners check for bonded construction at intake.

Pre-spotting damage — ring marks and bleach spots

Aggressive or incorrect stain pre-treatment is the second most common source of dry cleaning damage. Two specific failures:

Ring marks: when a spotting agent is applied too broadly, it can dissolve surface oils in a ring around the stain. When the solvent evaporates, this ring deposits as a visible mark — often worse-looking than the original stain. Correct spotting technique applies the agent to the stain only, working from the edge inward.

Bleach spot damage: some stain removers contain oxidising agents. Applied to delicate coloured fabrics — particularly vegetable-dyed silks and block-printed cotton — these can cause irreversible colour loss. Experienced spotters test unfamiliar fabrics before applying any oxidising agent.

What to tell your dry cleaner

Always tell your dry cleaner what caused a stain and how old it is. "There is a stain here" is less useful than "haldi stain from three days ago." The correct pre-spotting agent depends on the stain type — knowing it prevents wrong-agent damage.

Mechanical damage — abrasion in the drum

Delicate embellishments — sequins, mirrors, beaded work, fragile embroidery — can be damaged by the tumbling action of the drum. Professional dry cleaners use mesh laundry bags for embellished garments to reduce direct contact during the cycle. Heavily embellished pieces may be cleaned with minimal drum rotation or treated primarily by hand.

Overloaded drums are a risk in under-resourced operations — when too many garments are loaded at once, mechanical abrasion between garments increases. A professional operation loads the drum at a fraction of its volume capacity to prevent this.

The prevention checklist — before you hand over an expensive garment

Five things to do before handing over a high-value garment for dry cleaning:

1. Tell them the fabric. If you know it is 100% silk, say so. If it is a blend, tell them. This determines pressing temperature and solvent approach.

2. Point out every stain. Don't assume they will find them. Point to each stain and describe what caused it and how old it is.

3. Flag embellishments. Mirrors, sequins, beaded work, fragile embroidery — point them out. Ask how they will handle these specifically.

4. Check for pre-existing damage. Any existing tears, loose threads, or worn areas should be noted on the intake record so they cannot be attributed to the cleaning.

5. Ask for a quote before you agree. For bridal or high-value garments, ask for a price and confirm any risk factors before the process starts.

Hydrocarbon dry cleaning does not cause shrinkage — it contains no water, and shrinkage requires water penetrating the fibre. Over-aggressive drying heat inside the drum or excessive pressing heat can cause dimensional changes in wool, but this is rare in professional operations with correct temperature settings.
