Why do clean clothes smell?
Freshly washed clothes smell because bacteria are growing in them during the drying period, not because they were not cleaned. The washing cycle kills most bacteria and removes soiling. But if the clothes remain damp for more than a few hours after the wash cycle — which is common in humid Indian conditions — bacteria recolonise the fabric and produce the characteristic musty odour.
The bacteria responsible are primarily Micrococcus and Bacillus species that are ubiquitous in household air. They need only moisture and organic substrate — present in any fabric — to multiply rapidly. At 30°C and 80%+ relative humidity, the growth rate is fast enough to produce detectable odour within 4–6 hours of damp fabric sitting still.
The monsoon problem — 85% humidity and what it does
Normal evaporation of water from fabric requires the air surrounding the fabric to be able to absorb moisture. At 85% relative humidity — typical in Kolkata from June to September — the air is nearly saturated. Evaporation slows dramatically. A shirt that dries in 90 minutes in February takes 4–6 hours in August. Those extra hours of dampness are exactly the bacterial growth window.
This is not a failure of the washing machine or the detergent. It is a physical constraint of drying wet fabric in saturated air. The solutions are: mechanical means to accelerate drying (fans, dehumidifiers), reducing the initial water content of the garment leaving the machine (higher spin speed for appropriate fabrics), or accepting that some garments will need professional pressing rather than home drying during monsoon months.
Steam pressing at 140°C kills bacteria and instantly drives out moisture. Garments that have developed a musty smell after home drying can be saved with professional pressing — the heat both destroys the bacteria and evaporates the residual moisture that sustains them.
Machine settings that actually help
Increase spin speed for appropriate fabrics. Each 200 RPM increase in spin speed removes a measurable additional quantity of water from the fabric. For cotton and synthetics: 1,000–1,200 RPM. The less water leaving the machine, the faster the garment dries.
Reduce load size during monsoon season. An overloaded drum leaves garments with more residual water because the extraction is less effective. Washing smaller loads during high-humidity months makes a practical difference to drying time.
Do not leave clothes in the machine after the cycle ends. The sealed, humid environment of a finished wash cycle is ideal for bacterial growth. Transfer to drying immediately.
Clean the machine drum monthly. Bacterial and mould colonies grow inside washing machine drums, particularly around the rubber door seal. A monthly hot cycle with no clothes and a cup of white vinegar or a dedicated machine cleaning tablet maintains the drum hygiene.
Drying clothes in India — what works
The sequence that minimises musty smell:
Immediately after the cycle: shake each garment vigorously before hanging. This separates the fabric weave and creates air gaps that accelerate evaporation.
Hang with space between garments. Clothes hung touching each other dry slower in the contact areas. Space allows air circulation around the entire garment.
Use a fan. Directed airflow is the most effective drying accelerator available at home. A table fan pointed at hanging clothes reduces drying time by 50–60% even in high-humidity conditions.
Near a window — but not in direct sunlight for coloured garments. Natural air movement through a window helps. Direct strong sunlight fades colours in synthetic and many cotton fabrics.
Indoors with AC running: air conditioning both reduces temperature and dehumidifies — both beneficial for drying. If you have AC in the room, run it during the initial drying period.
When home drying has already failed
If clothes have already developed a musty smell after drying, home washing again is often insufficient — the bacteria are embedded in the fabric and a second wash in the same humid conditions recreates the problem. The most effective intervention is professional steam pressing.
