The three solvents — safety comparison
The correct answer depends entirely on which solvent your dry cleaner uses.

The key question before handing over any infant garment: what solvent does this dry cleaner use? If they use hydrocarbon or GreenEarth, professional cleaning is safe. If they use Perc, hand washing is the better option for infant clothing. If they use MTO or cannot name their solvent, do not use them for any garment, let alone an infant's.
Infants have higher skin surface area relative to body weight than adults, thinner skin with higher permeability, and less developed detoxification systems. Chemical exposures that are negligible for an adult are proportionally greater for a newborn. This is why solvent choice matters more, not less, for infant clothing.
When does baby clothing actually need dry cleaning?
Most baby clothes — cotton onesies, bibs, everyday cotton wear — should be machine washed, not dry cleaned. The occasions when dry cleaning is appropriate for infant clothing:
Wool baby clothing: merino cardigans, woollen wraps and blankets, which will felt and shrink in a washing machine. These need either specialist hand washing or gentle dry cleaning.
Ceremonial garments: the silk jamas worn for naming ceremonies, the embroidered outfits gifted for first birthdays and religious occasions. These are typically worn once and stored — dry cleaning before storage is the correct approach.
Heirloom pieces: clothing passed down from older children or previous generations, which may have accumulated storage odour or light soiling that requires professional treatment..
Everyday cotton and synthetic baby clothes should always be machine washed — dry cleaning is unnecessary cost for items that wash perfectly well.
Airing after collection — the one step to not skip
Even with hydrocarbon solvent and full recovery, a professionally dry-cleaned garment may carry a faint solvent vapour when first collected. This is normal. For adult garments, it dissipates within 2–4 hours of open-air hanging. For infant clothing, we recommend a longer airing period: 12–24 hours hanging in a well-ventilated space before the garment is worn or stored near the infant.
Remove the garment from the polythene transport bag immediately on collection. Hang it openly in a ventilated room. The vapour is harmless — it is residual vapour, not liquid residue — but there is no reason not to give it additional time to dissipate fully for a garment intended for an infant.
Machine washing vs dry cleaning — which is right for which garments
For baby clothes specifically, the default should be machine washing. Dry clean only when the fabric or construction requires it. A useful decision framework:
Machine wash: cotton, polyester, blended synthetics, knit cotton, terry cloth. These are the majority of everyday baby clothes and they wash perfectly well in a gentle cycle at 30–40°C.
Dry clean: structured wool or cashmere knitwear, silk ceremonial garments, heavily embroidered pieces, heirloom items where you are uncertain of the fabric composition.
When in doubt, check the care label. And if it says dry clean only, find a dry cleaner who can tell you their solvent before handing over an infant's garment.
