Stain Removal The Swiss Laundry  ·  Expert Guide

How to remove Holi colour from clothes — what works and what sets it permanently.

Holi is one day a year. The colour it leaves can be permanent if handled incorrectly. This guide covers what works at home on everyday fabrics, what causes permanent damage on delicate ones, and how professional treatment recovers what home cannot.

At a glance

What this guide covers.

  • Dry gulal is easier to treat than wet Holi colour — always brush off loose pigment before applying water
  • Cotton and synthetic fabrics respond well to cold water and dish soap when the stain is fresh
  • Silk, wool, and embroidered fabric must go directly to a professional — home water treatment causes permanent damage
  • Heat permanently sets Holi colour — no hot water, no dryer, no ironing before complete stain removal
  • Professional treatment within 48 hours achieves near-complete removal on most fabrics including light silk

Home method — for cotton and synthetic fabrics only.

For cotton kurtas, synthetic shirts, and denim — the home approach has a good success rate when the stain is fresh. Fresh means within 1–2 hours, before the dye has had time to bond with the fibre.

1
Brush off loose dry pigment first — outdoors
Take the garment outside and gently brush off all loose dry pigment with a soft brush or dry cloth. Do not do this indoors. This removes the majority of the pigment load before any water contact.
2
Cold water soak — not hot, not warm
Soak in cold water for 15–20 minutes. Cold water limits the dye's ability to penetrate the fibre further. Hot water opens the fibre structure and drives the dye in deeper.
3
Liquid dish soap — gentle, on cotton and synthetics only
Work liquid dish soap gently into the stained area. Leave for 10 minutes. Rinse with cold water. Repeat 2–3 times. The stain should lighten with each cycle.
4
Air dry and assess — never heat until fully gone
Air dry after each treatment. Do not use a dryer or iron until the stain is completely gone. Any residual colour will be permanently set by heat.
Dry gulal vs wet Holi colour

Dry gulal (powder pigment) is mechanically removed by brushing and is treatable at home on cotton when fresh. Wet Holi colour — mixed in water or applied as a paste — has already begun the process of dye-fibre bonding before it contacts fabric. Wet-applied colour is significantly harder and requires professional treatment even on cotton.

Where home treatment causes permanent damage.

Home treatment works on fresh dry gulal on cotton. It fails — and causes irreversible damage — in three situations.

1
On silk, wool, or embroidered fabric
The home treatment protocol — cold soaking and detergent agitation — causes silk lustre loss, wool shrinkage, and embroidery thread colour bleeding. The method that is harmless on a cotton kurta causes irreversible damage on a silk saree. Holi colour on silk must go directly to a professional, no home treatment.
2
When heat is applied before complete removal
Any heat — warm dryer, direct sunlight on wet stained fabric, ironing — triggers reactive dye molecules to form permanent bonds with the fibre. A partially treated stain in a warm dryer becomes a permanently set stain. Check under good light before any heat exposure.
3
When the stain is more than 24 hours old
After 24 hours, the dye has bonded significantly with the fibre. Home treatment may partially reduce it but is unlikely to achieve complete removal. Professional treatment with targeted reducing agents is required.
The Holi wardrobe decision

Wear dedicated old Holi clothes, or wear garments you intend to treat professionally within 24 hours. Wearing a silk saree or embroidered kurta to Holi and expecting home treatment to fix it is the most reliable path to permanently stained garments.

What professional treatment achieves.

Professional treatment for Holi colour uses pre-spotting chemistry, controlled mechanical action, and fabric-specific cleaning cycles. The result is significantly better than home treatment — particularly on fabrics home treatment cannot safely touch.

1
Fabric-specific protocol
Cotton and synthetic: wet cleaning with specialist colour-removing surfactants at controlled temperature. Silk and wool: dry pre-spotting followed by solvent treatment — no water contact. Embroidered pieces: hand spotting on stained areas only, protecting embroidery thread.
2
Reducing agents for bonded dye
Professional spotting agents include reducing agents that break the dye-fibre bond in ways household detergents cannot. pH-controlled, fibre-specific, not available in general retail. This is the chemistry that achieves removal on stains that home treatment has already set.
3
Multiple cycles with honest assessment
Fresh stains respond to 1–2 cycles. Older or heat-set stains require more. We assess after each cycle and advise you honestly on what remains achievable before continuing.
The 48-hour window

Holi colour brought within 48 hours has a high removal rate on cotton, synthetic, and light silk. After 48 hours, the prognosis decreases. After any heat exposure, we attempt treatment and give you an honest prognosis before proceeding.

Holi colour questions
answered directly.

Brush loose dry pigment off outdoors first. Cold water soak for 20 minutes. Liquid dish soap worked in gently, left 10 minutes, rinsed with cold water. Repeat 2–3 times. Air dry — no dryer. Most Holi colour on white cotton responds to this method within a few hours of application.

Do not apply any water. Gently brush off any loose dry powder outdoors. Bring it to a professional dry cleaner within 24 hours. Do not attempt home treatment on silk — it will cause more damage than the stain.

Dry cleaning alone (without pre-spotting) gives partial results. Pre-spotting with reducing agents before the solvent cycle is required for the best outcome on set or difficult Holi stains.

Yes, with care. The embroidery requires hand spotting rather than machine treatment. Bring it in and we will assess the specific piece before treating.

Treatment is included in our standard cleaning price for most stains. For complex multi-colour staining, WhatsApp us on 9836233354 with a photo for an honest assessment.
