How to remove sweat stains and yellow underarm stains from clothes.

The yellow stain under the collar or in the underarms of a white shirt was not there when you stored it. It appeared during storage from body oils you could not see. This guide explains what it actually is, how to treat it at home on cotton, and when professional treatment is needed.

Home method — for cotton shirts and everyday fabrics.

Yellow sweat and body oil stains on cotton and linen respond to acid-based home treatment when they are moderate and the garment has not been through a hot dryer. The chemistry: the alkaline minerals in sweat combine with body oils and deodorant residue. An acid pre-treatment disrupts this combination.

White vinegar pre-soak — cotton and linen
Apply undiluted white vinegar directly to the yellowed area. Leave for 30 minutes. The acetic acid in vinegar disrupts the mineral-oil combination that causes the yellowing. Rinse with cold water.

Baking soda paste — for heavier yellowing
Mix baking soda with water to form a paste. Apply to the stain after the vinegar step, leave 30 minutes, then scrub gently with an old soft toothbrush. The mild abrasion combined with the alkaline baking soda lifts surface oxidised oils.

Cold machine wash with biological detergent
After pre-treatment, machine wash on a cool cycle (not hot) with a biological enzyme detergent. The enzymes break down the protein component of sweat. The cool temperature prevents further oil oxidation and setting.

Air dry and assess — no dryer until stain is gone
Air dry in sunlight if possible — UV helps break down residual yellowing on white cotton. Assess before putting in a dryer. If yellowing remains, repeat the treatment rather than heat-drying.
Why the stain appears during storage and not during wearing

Body oils are pale yellow-colourless when fresh. During storage, they undergo oxidative polymerisation — a chemical process driven by exposure to air, heat, and light. The oil transforms from a colourless liquid into a yellow or brown polymer. This is why the shirt looked fine when you stored it in May and emerged yellow in October.

Why they keep coming back — and what home washing leaves behind.

Home washing reduces sweat stains on cotton but often does not eliminate them. There are two reasons.

The oil component does not dissolve in water
Sweat stains have two components: water-soluble salts (which home washing removes effectively) and oil-based body oils (which water does not dissolve). Home washing removes the salt component but leaves behind the oil component, which continues to oxidise and creates the persistent yellowing that returns after each wash.

Heat sets the oil component deeper
Hot washing or tumble drying oil-stained fabric drives the oxidised oil deeper into the fibre and accelerates the polymerisation process. Shirts washed repeatedly on hot cycles with persistent underarm staining typically have deeply set oil staining that becomes progressively harder to treat.

The invisible soils on stored garments
Garments stored with invisible body oil residue will yellow during storage regardless of home washing. The critical principle: clean before storing, not before the next wearing. The oils that cause yellowing are deposited during wearing, not during the next use of the garment.

What professional treatment does differently.

Professional dry cleaning uses hydrocarbon solvent that dissolves the oil component of body soil — the component that water-based home washing cannot touch. This is the fundamental difference in outcome.

Solvent dissolves what water cannot
Hydrocarbon solvent is chemically similar to body oils — the like-dissolves-like principle of solvent chemistry. The solvent cycle removes the body oil component that creates persistent yellowing. Home washing with water cannot dissolve these oils regardless of detergent used.

Pre-treatment for set yellowing on formal shirts
For shirts with significant accumulated underarm yellowing, professional pre-spotting with reducing agents breaks down the oxidised polymer before the solvent cycle. This combination addresses what solvent alone cannot remove on heavily oxidised stains.

The most valuable professional treatment for this type of staining is not remedial — it is preventive. Bringing formal garments for professional cleaning before storage removes the invisible oils before they oxidise. No yellowing appears during storage because there is no oil left to oxidise.

Not safely at home. The acid and alkaline treatments required for sweat stain removal on cotton (vinegar, baking soda) are too harsh for silk. Bring silk with yellowing to a professional dry cleaner. Professional treatment with targeted chemistry achieves good improvement on mild to moderate silk yellowing.

Related but different. Body odour in fabric is caused by bacterial metabolism of skin secretions — the bacteria produce volatile compounds that create the smell. The smell component responds to washing with antibacterial detergents. The yellowing (visual component) is caused by oxidised body oils and responds to solvent treatment. Both are usually present together.

Formal shirts worn at events should be professionally cleaned after every wearing, or at least before storing. Shirts worn regularly to an office — without heavy physical activity — should be professionally cleaned every 4–6 wearings or whenever underarm yellowing is visible.
