Immediately after the function
The first action with a wedding saree after the function is not cleaning — it is hanging. A saree removed after hours of wearing while still warm from body heat should be hung immediately on a broad hanger, not folded and set aside. Folding while warm sets creases that are harder to press out later and concentrates the body soils at the fold lines.
Hang it in a well-ventilated space — a bedroom with a window open, not in a closed wardrobe. Allow it to air for at least 2 hours before any further handling. This allows body heat and moisture to dissipate, which reduces the risk of localised fabric stress at the body-contact areas.
Body temperature has raised the silk fibres to 35–37°C. At this temperature, oils and soils are at their most mobile — they have not yet cooled and solidified into the fabric structure. Hanging allows the fabric to cool and the soils to be distributed evenly rather than concentrating at fold lines.
What not to do
The actions most likely to cause permanent damage to a wedding saree in the 48 hours after the function are typically motivated by the desire to help. They make things worse.
Do not apply water to any stain on silk — including sindoor, turmeric, ghee or food stains. Water causes silk to swell and drives the stain deeper into the fibre. Do not use stain removal products from home — the alcohol, bleach or surfactants in household stain removers damage silk. Do not iron or steam to remove creases — leave pressing to professionals. Do not fold and pack away without cleaning — stored soils become permanent stains.

Bringing it for cleaning
When you bring the saree for cleaning, be specific about what happened and where. Point out every stain — including marks you are not sure about. Mention specifically if ritual materials (sindoor, turmeric, ghee, kumkum) were involved. The pre-treatment for each stain type is different, and the cleaner needs to know what they are dealing with before the garment enters the main cleaning cycle.

After cleaning — storage
After dry cleaning, a silk wedding saree needs at least 24 hours of airing before it is stored. The dry cleaning process itself is solvent-based and the garment emerges dry, but a period of airing allows any residual solvent traces to fully dissipate and the fabric to relax into its natural state.
After airing: wrap in acid-free tissue paper. Fold along the original fold lines, with additional tissue padding at each fold. Store in a cotton muslin bag — not in the dry cleaner's polybag. Add a cedar block or dried neem leaves for moth protection. Store in the coolest, driest, darkest part of the wardrobe. Label the package — note the occasion, the date, and the saree description.
