The normal smell
When a garment is removed from a professional dry cleaning machine, it is dry — the machine's drying cycle removes the solvent through warm air circulation. But some trace solvent remains in the fabric fibres after the cycle completes. This is normal. The trace amount is below any health threshold, and it evaporates quickly when the garment is exposed to room temperature air.
The smell is faint and slightly petroleum-like — closer to the smell of a clean petrol station than to fuel itself. It is distinctly different from the smell of MTO or white petrol cleaning. It dissipates in normal room air within 1–4 hours for most garments.
Hydrocarbon solvent has a low boiling point — it evaporates readily at room temperature. The trace solvent in a freshly dry cleaned garment evaporates into the surrounding air as soon as the garment is removed from the sealed machine environment. The smell you detect is the vapour of this evaporation — it dissipates as the solvent is released.
The MTO smell — different problem
The smell of clothes cleaned with MTO or white petrol is categorically different from the faint smell of professional dry cleaning. MTO has a strong, sharp, persistent petroleum smell — the same family of smell as paint thinner or turpentine. It does not dissipate in the same way as professional solvent because the heavier aromatic compounds in MTO have higher boiling points and remain in the fabric longer.
The garment was cleaned with MTO or white petrol, not professional dry cleaning solvent. The smell indicates residual petroleum compounds in the fabric that will be in contact with your skin when worn. Do not wear the garment until it has been properly cleaned by a professional dry cleaner using sealed automatic equipment and professional-grade hydrocarbon solvent.
How long it lasts
The timeline for normal professional dry cleaning smell dissipation:

When it persists
A smell that persists beyond the expected airing time for that garment type is a sign of incomplete solvent recovery. The solvent was not fully extracted from the garment during the machine drying cycle. This can be caused by: a machine whose solvent recovery system is not functioning correctly; insufficient drying time; overloading of the cleaning drum (which reduces the efficiency of air circulation during drying); or a fault in the machine's vacuum system.
The correct response: return the garment to the cleaner and ask for additional machine drying. This should resolve the problem in one additional cycle. If it does not, the machine has a problem and you should not continue to use that cleaner for valuable garments.
What no smell should mean
A garment that has aired for the appropriate time and has no residual smell is ready to wear and ready to store. The absence of smell confirms that solvent recovery was complete — the cleaning process did not leave chemical residue on the garment.
This is the standard that professional dry cleaning is designed to achieve. It is what makes the difference between a process that is safe for the skin of the person wearing the garment and one that is not. It is the reason the choice of dry cleaner — their equipment, their solvent, their process — matters.
