How to wash, iron and store chiffon and georgette garments. The most common fabrics in Indian occasion wear — and the ones most commonly damaged by incorrect ironing and handling. By The Swiss Laundry, Kolkata.
The care method for chiffon and georgette depends entirely on the fibre content — silk chiffon and silk georgette must be dry cleaned. Polyester chiffon and georgette can often be washed at home.

Chiffon and georgette are both defined by their construction — chiffon is a plain weave with high-twist yarns, georgette uses a similar crepe twist that gives it a slightly more textured surface. Both are sheer and lightweight. But the fibre determines everything about care.
Pure silk fibres. Water dulls the sheen and can distort the delicate weave permanently. The high-twist silk yarns that create the chiffon texture relax in water, causing the fabric to lose its characteristic drape. Dry clean only.
Pure silk fibres with crepe twist. Same risk as silk chiffon. The crepe texture is particularly vulnerable — water relaxes the twist permanently, destroying the georgette texture. Dry clean only.
Synthetic fibres. Polyester is water-stable. Can be machine-washed on a cold gentle cycle. But very heat-sensitive — never tumble dry at high heat or iron at medium-high temperatures. If embellished, dry clean regardless.
Synthetic fibres with crepe texture. Can be cold machine-washed. The crepe texture in polyester is heat-set during manufacturing and is more stable in water than silk georgette. But the texture can be permanently flattened by high heat ironing.
Any chiffon or georgette with zardozi, resham, sequins or stone work. Regardless of the base fabric type — the embellishments require dry cleaning. The lightweight base cannot support embellishment weight when wet.
Plant-based fibre, but extremely unstable in water. Rayon chiffon shrinks, loses shape and changes texture dramatically in water. Dry clean. Hand-washing is possible only for very plain, unstructured pieces — and risks significant texture change.
Silk chiffon and georgette — dry cleaning
Silk chiffon and silk georgette are dry-clean-only fabrics. The silk fibres, the twisted construction, and the extreme sheerness and lightness of these fabrics all make water-based cleaning unsafe.
What happens in water: The high-twist silk yarns that create the characteristic texture absorb water unevenly. As they dry, they set in a slightly different tension — the subtle drape and texture that defines silk chiffon is diminished. On silk georgette, the crepe texture — created by the yarn twist — can partially or fully relax, leaving the fabric with a flatter, stiffer surface.
Pressing silk chiffon: Professional pressing uses boiler steam without direct contact — the steam relaxes and sets the fabric from a distance. At The Swiss Laundry, silk chiffon is pressed with a pressing cloth at the lowest steam temperature appropriate for silk. The aim is to restore the fall and drape without flattening the weave.
Handling: Silk chiffon is the most snag-prone of all Indian occasion wear fabrics. One rough edge or sharp piece of jewellery is enough to create a run. Handle with clean, smooth hands. Remove jewellery before draping or folding.
Polyester chiffon and georgette — washing at home
Plain polyester chiffon and georgette can be washed at home if certain conditions are met.
Machine washing: Cold water only. Gentle or delicate cycle. Place in a fine mesh laundry bag — this prevents the fabric from catching on drum paddles or other garments. Mild detergent. Do not wash with heavy garments like jeans that could mechanically damage the delicate fabric.
Hand washing: Cold water. Mild detergent. Soak for maximum 5 minutes. Swish gently — do not agitate or wring. Press excess water out gently between two clean towels. Never wring polyester chiffon — it creates permanent twist marks.
Drying: Lay flat or hang on a padded hanger. Never tumble dry polyester chiffon at high heat — the fabric melts at ironing temperature, and a tumble dryer drum reaches higher temperatures than this. Air dry completely before storing.
Ironing chiffon and georgette — the critical step
Ironing chiffon and georgette at the wrong temperature is the most common form of permanent damage to these fabrics. The consequences range from sheen marks on silk to melted fabric on synthetic.
The temperature rules:
Silk chiffon and georgette: Lowest silk setting (110°C maximum). Always from the reverse side. Always through a damp pressing cloth. Never steam from directly above — the pressure of steam can distort the fine weave. Hold the iron slightly above the cloth rather than pressing down.
Polyester chiffon and georgette: Coolest synthetic setting (under 110°C). Never press polyester directly — it melts at ironing temperature. Always through a pressing cloth. Test on a hidden seam allowance first.
For both: Work in the direction of the weave. Short, light strokes rather than pressing down with weight. The fabric should be slightly damp — either use a pressing cloth dampened with clean water, or iron while the fabric still has a slight residual damp from washing.
Stain treatment — chiffon and georgette

Storing chiffon and georgette — snag prevention first
The storage priorities for chiffon and georgette are different from heavier fabrics — the primary concern is snag prevention rather than moth protection or moisture control (though the latter still matters).
Hanging vs folding: Light chiffon and georgette garments can be hung on padded hangers. Avoid wire hangers — the narrow pressure point at the shoulder creates a permanent mark in chiffon. Ensure nothing rough (other garment closures, jewellery on adjacent garments) can catch the fabric while hanging.
If folding: Fold loosely with tissue paper between layers. Do not pack tightly — the compression creates fold marks in chiffon that are difficult to remove.
Sarees specifically: Chiffon and georgette sarees should be folded with the embroidered or embellished sections on the outside of the fold — never at a fold line where compression could damage embellishments. Rolling on a tube is the ideal method for heavily embellished chiffon sarees.
Silk chiffon and georgette: Same storage principles as all silk — dry clean before storing, muslin wrapping, silica gel during Kolkata monsoon.
