clothes care.
How to prepare, protect and preserve your Puja outfits — before, during and after the four days. Silk sarees, dhotis, sherwanis, lehengas and occasion wear. By The Swiss Laundry, Kolkata — since 2013.
Before Puja: preparing stored outfits
Durga Puja outfits are stored for approximately 11 months of the year — from Dashami one year to Shashthi the next. During this storage period, Kolkata's heat, humidity and monsoon climate affect even well-stored garments. The right preparation before Puja prevents the embarrassment of staining, odour or visible deterioration on the most important four days of the social calendar.
Why clean before wearing — even if the garment looks clean? Stored garments accumulate dust, absorb atmospheric moisture (particularly relevant in Kolkata's pre-monsoon and monsoon storage period), and may have developed surface mould or moth activity invisible to the naked eye. Chemical residue from storage — neem, cedar, even the muslin wrap — can irritate skin when worn. Sweat and oil residue from last year's wear, invisible after 11 months, is still present on the fabric and will begin to smell once body heat activates it.
Pressing matters as much as cleaning. A silk saree that has been folded for 11 months will have deep fold creases. A sherwani that has been hung may have shoulder distortion. Professional pressing restores the drape and structure that makes these garments look their best. Do not steam at home the night before — bring it in for professional pressing.

Which Puja garments need what cleaning
The Puja wardrobe spans a wide range of fabrics and constructions. The cleaning method varies by garment — but the rule for anything delicate, embroidered or silk is always dry cleaning.
Dry clean only. Banarasi, Kanjivaram, Tussar — all require professional dry cleaning before and after Puja. Never wash. On Dashami (Sindoor Khela), wear an older or less precious saree — sindoor is very difficult to remove from fine silk.
Dry clean only. Brocade, silk or embroidered sherwanis cannot be washed. The structure and lining also require dry cleaning. After Puja, the collar and underarm areas require targeted pre-spotting for sweat before the cleaning cycle.
Dry clean only. Silk dhotis crease deeply and watermark easily. Professional pressing is essential to restore the correct drape. Cotton dhotis can be washed at home but benefit from professional pressing.
Dry clean only. Zari, sequin and stone work on Puja lehengas cannot withstand washing. Multiple layers and lining also require controlled dry cleaning. Allow extra time for pressing — the volume of fabric requires careful work.
Dry clean only. Plain cotton kurtas can be washed at home. Silk, brocade or embroidered kurtas require dry cleaning. The kurta collar and underarm areas should be pre-spotted for sweat and perfume residue.
Wash at home. Plain cotton kurtas can be machine washed. Hand-block printed cotton should be cold-washed only to prevent colour bleed. For best pressing results, have them professionally pressed before Puja.
Dry clean only if silk or embroidered. Plain cotton or synthetic salwar kameez can be washed. Silk, georgette or heavily embroidered sets require dry cleaning to protect both the fabric and the embellishments.
Dry clean only. Structured Indian formalwear has internal tailoring that distorts in water. The lining and canvas require dry cleaning. After Puja, allow to air for 24 hours before bringing in — the internal canvas needs to breathe.
During Puja: protecting your clothes across the four days
The four days of Puja combine outdoor humidity, incense smoke, dhuno (resin incense), sindoor, food, and crowd contact — all of which affect fine garments. Some protection is possible with a little foresight.
Puja stain first aid — what to do immediately
Puja involves rituals, food, smoke and celebration — all of which create staining opportunities. The most important rule applies to all of them: do not apply water to a silk saree. Do not rub. Do not panic. Bring it to a professional.
| Stain | Immediate action | Do not |
|---|---|---|
| Sindoor / kumkum | Do not touch. Gently shake off loose powder. Bring to dry cleaner immediately — same day if possible. Tell them it is sindoor. | Do not apply water. Do not rub. Do not attempt removal at home. |
| Dhuno (resin smoke) | Air the garment in shade overnight. Bring to dry cleaner after Puja ends. Inform them of smoke exposure. | Do not wash. Do not hang in sun — UV can set smoke discolouration. |
| Bhog food (ghee, mishti) | Blot excess with a dry cloth — no rubbing. Bring to dry cleaner as soon as possible. Fresh oil stains respond very well to solvent. | Do not apply water, salt, or talc. Do not rub. |
| Tea / cold drinks | Blot excess liquid with a dry cloth. Do not spread. Bring to dry cleaner the same day if possible — tea stains on silk set quickly. | Do not wet the stain. Do not apply soda water. Do not rub. |
| Perfume / attar | Allow to dry naturally in shade. Bring to dry cleaner after the day — perfume alcohol leaves a residue that degrades silk if left long-term. | Do not apply anything. Do not dry with heat. |
| Lipstick / makeup | Do not touch the stain. Bring to dry cleaner — cosmetic stains are oil-based and respond well to pre-spotting. | Do not rub or wet. Do not use makeup remover on the fabric. |
| Sweat / perspiration | Air the garment overnight before folding. Dry clean all worn garments within two weeks — sweat on silk and wool causes permanent damage if stored without cleaning. | Do not store without airing first. Do not fold while still warm. |
After Puja: the most important cleaning of the year
The two weeks after Dashami are the busiest period of the year at The Swiss Laundry. Every Puja outfit worn across the four days needs cleaning before it is stored for the next 11 months. This is not optional — it is the single most important care action for preserving your Puja wardrobe long-term.
Storing Puja clothes for 11 months
Once cleaned and pressed, your Puja outfits need to survive the next 11 months — through Kolkata's winter dry, summer heat, and monsoon humidity — without damage. The storage method determines what condition they will be in when you open the box next Shashthi.
Wrap in cotton muslin — never plastic. Every silk saree, sherwani and embroidered garment should be wrapped individually in undyed, unbleached cotton muslin before storage. Muslin allows the fabric to breathe. Plastic bags trap moisture — in Kolkata's climate, even a small amount of residual moisture in a sealed plastic bag will create mould on silk protein fibres within weeks of the monsoon arriving.
Fold along different lines each year. Silk and structured garments develop permanent crease marks if folded on the same line repeatedly. When rewrapping for storage, vary the fold lines from the previous year. Store flat where possible, or loosely rolled around a muslin-covered tube.
Moth protection. Cedar blocks, dried neem leaves or lavender sachets placed near (not touching) stored silk and wool provide effective moth deterrence without chemical contact. Replace these annually — cedar and neem lose potency over 12 months. Do not use naphthalene mothballs against silk or wool.
After Puja in October, the garments go into storage just as Kolkata’s temperature begins to drop — but the humidity remains high through November. Then come the dry winter months, followed by the intense heat of March–May, and then the monsoon from June–September. The monsoon is the highest-risk period for stored silk and wool. A dehumidifier in the storage room, or sealed boxes with silica gel packets replaced monthly through June–September, significantly reduces mould risk. Inspect stored Puja clothes once in January and once in July — catching a problem early prevents permanent damage.
Durga Puja clothes care — specifically in Kolkata
The relationship between Kolkata and Durga Puja is unlike any other city-festival relationship in India. Puja in Kolkata is not a single occasion — it is the defining event of the social year, the primary occasion for wearing the finest garments owned, and the moment when the entire city is simultaneously dressed in its best. The volume of fine silk, wool and embroidered occasion wear in use across the five days of Puja in Kolkata has no equivalent anywhere in India.
The Swiss Laundry has operated at the Kasba Industrial Estate since October 2013 — we have been cleaning Kolkata’s Puja wardrobe for over a decade. The pattern is consistent: the two weeks before Puja and the two weeks after Puja are our highest-volume periods of the year.
The Kolkata Puja climate: Durga Puja falls in October, when Kolkata’s post-monsoon humidity remains high — typically 75 to 85 percent. The city is warm and humid, and the four days of Puja involve extended outdoor time at pandals, in crowds, and in the open. Silk absorbs atmospheric moisture and body heat quickly. The dhuno smoke from Sandhi Puja penetrates every fabric it encounters. These are Kolkata-specific conditions that amplify the need for professional care before and after the festival.
What we see at The Swiss Laundry after Puja every year: Sindoor stains on Dashami sarees brought in too late for full removal. Silk sarees yellowed from the previous year because they were stored without cleaning. Sherwanis with dhuno smoke odour that home washing cannot remove. Embroidered lehengas with set tea stains from Ashtami. All of these are preventable with the two rules: clean before storing, and bring stains in within two weeks.

Common questions
Questions about
Puja outfit care.
Yes — if stored since last Puja, dry clean before wear. Clothes stored for 11–12 months accumulate dust, absorb atmospheric moisture in Kolkata’s humidity, and may harbour moth larvae. Dry clean 1–2 weeks before Puja to allow time for any issues to be addressed.
Apply perfume to skin or hair before draping — not to the silk. Keep the saree away from sindoor and food stains during rituals. On Dashami (Sindoor Khela), wear an older or less precious saree. After each day, air in shade overnight before folding. Dry clean all worn silk sarees within two weeks of Dashami.
Puja outfits accumulate sweat, perfume, dhuno smoke, food residue and outdoor dust across the four days. If stored without cleaning, these oxidise over months — causing permanent yellowing and staining on silk, attracting moths to woollen garments, and embedding smoke odour that becomes nearly impossible to remove after a year.
Plain cotton kurtas and cotton dhotis can be washed at home. Silk dhotis, embroidered kurtas, silk kurtas, and garments with zari or embellishment must be dry cleaned. When in doubt, check the care label — a circle symbol means dry cleaning is required.
Do not apply water and do not rub — both spread the pigment and risk permanent watermarking on silk. Bring the saree to a dry cleaner as soon as possible after staining. Tell them what the stain is and when it happened. Sindoor is treatable if addressed within 24–48 hours. After a month, it may be permanent.
Before Puja: 1–2 weeks before Shashthi. After Puja: within two weeks of Dashami. The Swiss Laundry sees its highest volume in these two windows — call ahead or book a pickup to avoid delays. We offer doorstep pickup across 30+ areas in Kolkata on invoices above ₹1,000.
