The one rule

A Jamdani saree must always be dry cleaned. The fine muslin base is fragile — more so than any heavy silk saree. Water distorts both the base fabric and the supplementary weft pattern irreversibly.

Kolkata's connection to Jamdani: While Dhaka (Bangladesh) is the historical centre of Jamdani weaving, West Bengal has its own parallel tradition — the Fulia, Shantipur and Nadia district weavers produce Jamdani recognised as a West Bengal GI product. This is Kolkata's own heritage textile.
01

What is Jamdani

Jamdani is a fine muslin weave produced on traditional handlooms, using a supplementary weft technique where decorative threads are individually inserted alongside the base weft to create the characteristic floral and geometric patterns. It is recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The base fabric: The finest Jamdani uses cotton muslin of extraordinary fineness — historically measured in the hundreds of threads per inch, finer than any machine can produce today. Even modern Jamdani uses a very fine cotton muslin that is considerably lighter and more fragile than the silk base fabrics used in Banarasi or Kanjivaram sarees.

The supplementary weft: The pattern is created by weaving additional threads — typically fine silk or cotton — through the base muslin at specific points. This creates a design that floats slightly above the base fabric surface. These supplementary threads are the part most vulnerable to distortion from water or pressure.

The West Bengal tradition: Shantipur, Fulia and surrounding areas in Nadia district produce Jamdani that differs slightly from the Dhaka variety — often incorporating local motifs and using local hand-spun cotton. This is a GI-protected product of West Bengal and is sold extensively in Kolkata.

How to identify genuine Jamdani: Hold a Jamdani saree up to light — the base fabric is transparent enough that your hand should be visible through it. The pattern threads create a slight three-dimensional quality — you can feel the supplementary weft under your fingers. Imitations use screen-printed patterns on a flat surface.
02

Why Jamdani must be dry cleaned

Jamdani requires dry cleaning for two separate reasons — the base fabric and the pattern technique — either of which alone would make water-based cleaning unsafe.

The muslin base: Fine cotton muslin has minimal structural strength compared to silk or wool. When wet, the fibres swell and the weave distorts. Because Jamdani is woven at very low thread counts (the fineness comes from thread quality, not density), the structure is inherently open and fragile. Water agitation — even very gentle — shifts the threads out of alignment. The distortion cannot be fully reversed.

The supplementary weft pattern: The decorative threads that create the Jamdani pattern are not structurally locked into the base weave in the same way as the ground threads. They are held in place by being wrapped around warp threads at each end of the pattern. Water agitation can loosen or misalign these threads, distorting the pattern — sometimes irreversibly.

The handling requirement: Even in dry cleaning, Jamdani requires special care. The saree should enter the drum in a fine mesh bag to eliminate drum contact. The cycle should be shorter and at lower agitation than standard. Pressing is done with minimal steam pressure and no direct contact anywhere on the fabric.

Never wring or squeeze Jamdani: Even when being moved by hand — without water — the fine muslin base can distort if handled too roughly. Always support the full weight of the saree when carrying or folding. Do not let it hang under its own weight for extended periods.
03

Handling a Jamdani saree — before and after wearing

Jamdani requires more careful physical handling than heavier sarees. The fine muslin base does not have the weight and structure that helps a Banarasi or Kanjivaram hold its shape during normal handling.

Draping: Apply any perfume or body lotion well before draping. Never spray perfume on or near the draped saree — perfume alcohol weakens cotton fibres and leaves residue. Keep the saree away from jewellery with sharp edges that could snag the fine muslin.

After wearing: Air the saree for one to two hours laid flat or hanging lightly — not folded — before storing. The body heat and any perspiration absorbed during wear need to dissipate. Fold carefully with full support — never let one end hang while the other is held.

Ironing: Jamdani should be pressed with the minimum heat necessary. The fine muslin scorches at lower temperatures than heavier fabrics. Use the cotton setting (not linen high) and always press through a damp pressing cloth from the reverse side. Never press directly on the pattern side — the supplementary weft threads can flatten permanently.

Oil / foodBlot excess with a completely dry cloth. Support the fabric fully — do not let the stained area hang. Dry cleaner within 24 hours.Do not rub. Do not apply anything.

SweatAir for two hours. Dry clean before storing. Sweat weakens cotton fibres over time — more so on fine muslin than on heavier fabrics.Do not store without cleaning.
05

Storing a Jamdani saree — roll, never fold

The most important storage difference between Jamdani and other sarees: roll, do not fold. The fine muslin base creases permanently at fold lines under any sustained pressure. A Jamdani stored folded for months emerges with visible permanent creases that require professional pressing to address — and may not fully release even then.

1
Dry clean before storing — alwaysSweat and residue on fine cotton muslin yellows permanently over months. Insects are attracted to protein residue in unwashed fabric.
2
Roll on a muslin-covered tubeRoll the saree around a clean tube covered in undyed muslin — a cardboard tube from fabric, wrapped in muslin, works well. Keep the pattern side facing outward. This eliminates all fold lines.
3
If folding is necessary — pad every fold lineUse rolled acid-free tissue at every fold. Vary the fold lines each time you refold. A permanent crease in Jamdani muslin is very difficult to remove.
4
Wrap in undyed cotton muslinNever plastic. The fine muslin needs to breathe. Any trapped moisture will cause the cotton fibres to weaken over a 8-month storage period.
5
Silica gel during Kolkata monsoon — essentialCotton muslin absorbs atmospheric moisture readily. In Kolkata monsoon conditions, unprotected Jamdani in storage can develop mildew within weeks. Replace silica gel monthly from June to September.
06

Jamdani care — do and do not

Do
  • Dry clean only — the muslin base is too fragile for water
  • Roll on a muslin-covered tube for storage
  • Dry clean before every seasonal storage
  • Support the full weight when carrying or folding
  • Press through a damp cloth from the reverse side only
  • Use silica gel during Kolkata monsoon — essential
  • Air flat for 1–2 hours after wearing before storing
Do not
  • Wash in water under any circumstances
  • Fold for long-term storage — roll instead
  • Let the saree hang under its own weight
  • Rub or aggressively handle — the muslin distorts
  • Press from the pattern side
  • Store in plastic
  • Store in a humid room during monsoon without desiccant

Common questions

Questions.
Answered.

Dry clean only. The fine muslin base is fragile — more so than any heavy silk saree. Water distorts the muslin and can loosen the supplementary weft pattern irreversibly.

Jamdani is a fine muslin weave with supplementary weft decoration — extra decorative threads individually woven through the base to create the pattern. A UNESCO-recognised craft with traditions in both Bangladesh (Dhaka Jamdani) and West Bengal.

Roll on a muslin-covered tube — never fold. Dry clean first. Wrap in undyed cotton muslin. Store flat in a box away from humidity. Silica gel desiccant during Kolkata monsoon is essential for fine cotton muslin.

Jamdani uses fine cotton muslin as the base — much lighter and structurally more open than the heavy silk weaves of Banarasi or Kanjivaram. The supplementary weft pattern threads are also less securely bound than woven-in patterns.

Yes, carefully. Cotton setting through a damp pressing cloth from the reverse side only. Never press on the pattern side — the supplementary weft threads can flatten permanently. Use minimal pressure.
