The biggest garment care problem during monsoon is slow drying. Slow drying leads to mildew — the musty smell that defines monsoon laundry. The solution is maximising air movement across wet fabric.

Indoor drying — the correct method: Use a free-standing drying rack directly under a ceiling fan at full speed. Space clothes widely — overlapping prevents drying. Rotate positions every few hours so inner layers dry too.

Most effective tools:

Dehumidifier: The most effective investment for monsoon laundry in Kolkata. Removes moisture from the air, reducing drying time by 50–70% in high-humidity conditions.

Portable clothes dryer: Effective for smaller loads. Blows warm air across clothes. Useful for items that should not go in a tumble dryer.

Tumble dryer: Fastest option for appropriate fabrics. Use low or medium heat only — high heat causes shrinkage in cotton and linen. Never tumble dry wool, silk, velvet or embellished garments.

Clothes in storage are more vulnerable than clothes being worn — they are enclosed, undisturbed, and damage accumulates silently over weeks.

Stored wool: Wool absorbs atmospheric moisture at high humidity. A wool suit in a plastic bag during monsoon will emerge damp. A wool shawl without desiccant will develop surface mustiness. Mould on stored wool causes permanent fibre damage.

Stored silk: Silk sarees stored in high humidity yellow faster and may develop mould spots. Atmospheric moisture combined with warmth accelerates the oxidation of sweat residue.

Stored leather: Leather in a humid room during monsoon can develop mould on the surface — which, if not addressed immediately, can penetrate the hide permanently.

Cotton and synthetic: Remove and wash as soon as possible. Rinse immediately if you cannot wash right away — monsoon rain carries particulate that stains if left on fabric.

Wool: Blot excess moisture with a dry towel — do not wring. Lay flat or hang to dry at room temperature. No tumble drying. No heat. If dry-clean-only wool, bring for professional treatment.

Silk: Blot immediately with a dry cloth — do not rub. No heat to dry. Lay flat in a ventilated space. If watermarks are visible once dry, bring to a professional dry cleaner — do not attempt removal with water.

Leather: Blot excess moisture. Dry slowly at room temperature. Apply leather conditioner once completely dry — rain strips natural oils as leather dries.

Mould on clothes is the most common monsoon garment damage in Kolkata. It is entirely preventable if the conditions for mould growth are eliminated.

Mould needs three things: moisture, warmth, and organic material. In Kolkata monsoon, warmth and moisture are guaranteed. The organic material is the garment itself plus residual sweat, food residue and skin oil. Keeping clothes clean and controlling moisture are the two effective prevention strategies.

Never store clothes damp: A garment that feels dry may still have 10–15% moisture content — enough to develop mould within days of being sealed in a wardrobe during monsoon. Allow clothes to dry completely, then wait several more hours before storing.

Never store clothes worn but unwashed: Sweat and body residue on stored clothes is the food source for mould. A shirt worn for a day may look clean but carries enough biological material to sustain mould growth in high humidity.

Wash smaller loads: Smaller loads dry faster. In monsoon, drying speed is more important than washing efficiency.

Spin at maximum speed: A longer, higher-speed spin removes more water before drying begins. Most machines allow an extra spin cycle — use it during monsoon.

White vinegar in the rinse: 250ml in the final rinse inhibits mildew growth, removes the musty smell, acts as a natural fabric softener, and removes mineral deposits from hard water.

Send delicates to a professional: During monsoon, send silk, wool and embroidered occasion wear to a professional laundry more promptly than usual. Professional drying eliminates the slow-drying risk that is most damaging in monsoon conditions.
