The science: Natural fibres — wool, silk, cotton — have a coiled or crimped structure held under tension from the manufacturing process. Water molecules penetrate the fibre, causing it to swell. Heat relaxes the tension. When the fibre dries, it sets at a shorter length. This is shrinkage. Dry cleaning solvents are non-polar — they do not penetrate natural fibres, so swelling does not occur.

What actually causes fabric shrinkage

Shrinkage has three causes that typically work together:

Felting shrinkage (wool): The microscopic scales on wool fibres interlock when the fibre is agitated in water. This is irreversible — the fibres physically bond in a compressed position. A wool suit can lose one to two sizes from a single machine wash. This is the reason wool suits must be dry cleaned.

Relaxation shrinkage (most natural fibres): During fabric manufacturing, yarns are stretched under tension. Water releases this tension, allowing the fibre to return to its natural, shorter length. This happens in the first wash — subsequent washes cause less shrinkage as the tension has already been released.
