How often should a suit be dry cleaned?
The direct answer, why over-cleaning harms suits, what to do between cleans, and how to get the most life out of a well-made suit. By The Swiss Laundry, Kolkata.
Dry clean a suit every 3–4 wears, or approximately once per season. Not after every wear — that degrades the fabric. Not never — that allows sweat and oil to accumulate permanently.
The Swiss Laundry · Kasba, Kolkata · Est. 2013Why the frequency matters: Every dry cleaning cycle involves solvent, heat and mechanical action. These cause gradual fibre wear. But accumulated sweat, body oil and pollution particulates in an uncleaned suit also degrade the fibres and attract clothes moths. The right frequency balances both risks.
Dry cleaning frequency — by suit type and use
| Suit type / situation | Recommended frequency |
|---|---|
| Suit worn 3–4 times per week (office) | Every 3–4 wears — approximately monthly |
| Suit worn 1–2 times per week | Every 3–4 wears — approximately 6–8 weeks |
| Occasional suit (events, formal occasions) | 1–2 times per year, or after each significant event |
| Suit worn in summer heat / heavy perspiration | More frequently — every 2–3 wears. Sweat accelerates fabric degradation. |
| Suit before seasonal storage | Always dry clean before storing — never store without cleaning |
| Suit after a stain or visible soiling | Immediately — fresh stains are far more treatable than set ones |
| Wedding or bridal sherwani (one wear) | Dry clean within two weeks of wearing, before storage |
Between cleans — how to maintain a suit
The goal between dry cleaning sessions is to slow the accumulation of sweat, oil and particulates — extending the time before another clean is needed without compromising the suit.
What happens if you never dry clean a suit
A suit that is worn regularly but never dry cleaned accumulates several types of damage that worsen over time:
Yellowing at the collar and underarm: Sweat contains acids and proteins that oxidise in the fabric over months. The yellowing becomes permanent after approximately one full season of uncleaned storage.
Moth damage: Clothes moths are attracted to the protein residue in sweat on wool fibres — not to clean wool. A suit stored without cleaning is far more vulnerable to moth damage than a dry-cleaned suit. In Kolkata, moth activity is year-round in any building with adequate warmth.
Permanent sheen loss: Oils from skin and hair accumulate on the surface of the fabric over time, flattening the pile and creating a dull surface sheen in high-contact areas.
Set stains: Light stains that are barely visible at the time of wearing become progressively harder to remove as they oxidise into the fibre. A stain ignored for a full season may be permanent.

Every 3–4 wears, or approximately once per season for a regularly worn suit. More frequently in Kolkata's summer heat when perspiration is heavier. Always dry clean before seasonal storage.
Yes — every dry cleaning cycle causes gradual fibre wear. After every single wear is too often. Every 3–4 wears is the correct balance between cleaning necessity and fabric preservation.
Hang on a wide padded hanger. Allow 24 hours rest between wears. Brush with a soft clothes brush after wearing. Steam lightly from a distance to refresh. Deal with stains immediately.
Same principle as a suit: every 3–4 wears for regularly worn blazers. Occasional blazers — 1–2 times per year, or after each significant event. Always before seasonal storage.
Spot cleaning at home is not recommended for suits. The canvasing and interlining in a suit jacket reacts to localised moisture differently from the outer fabric, causing bubbling. If a stain occurs, bring the entire garment to a dry cleaner — spot cleaning is done correctly as part of the pre-treatment process before the full cleaning cycle.
