The complete garment
care guide.
Every fabric. Every season. Every occasion. The authoritative garment care resource for India — written by The Swiss Laundry, Kolkata, from 13 years of caring for the city's wardrobe.
Fabric care that protects.
Every fabric has different vulnerabilities. The same care method that cleans cotton perfectly will permanently damage silk. The same temperature that removes stains from linen will felt wool irreversibly. This resource covers every major fabric in the Indian wardrobe — what it is, what it needs, and what will damage it.
The Swiss Laundry has cared for Kolkata’s garments since 2013 — silk sarees for Puja, wool suits for winter, embroidered occasion wear for weddings, and everyday fabrics year-round. These guides are written from that experience: specific, accurate, and India-relevant.

Saree care.

Check the care label: circle = dry clean, tub = wash. If no label: silk, wool, velvet, pashmina, structured suits, embroidered occasion wear — dry clean. Plain cotton, linen and synthetic — wash. When uncertain, dry clean.
Plain cotton (kurtas, shirts, jeans), linen, polyester and synthetic blends can generally be machine-washed at the correct temperature. Always check the care label first.
Silk, wool, velvet, pashmina, cashmere, structured garments (suits, blazers), embroidered and embellished occasion wear, and any garment with a circle symbol on the care label.
Suits: every 3–4 wears. Silk sarees: every 1–2 wears and always before storage. Woollen shawls: every 2–3 winter wears then before summer storage. Occasion wear: within 2 weeks of wearing, before storing.
Storing garments without cleaning first. Sweat, oil and food residue on stored fabric yellows permanently over months, attracts moths, and is very difficult to remove after the storage period. Clean before storing — always.
